Forex starts its working hours when the Wellington (New Zealand Exchange) opens on Monday local time. Sydney (Australian Securities Exchange) opens in 2 hours.

Market 24h Clock shows the Pacific session as two lighten up orange Stock Exchanges: NZX Wellington and ASX Sydney.

Pacific session is characterised by rather low volatility compared to other sessions and is the calmest session of all. Trading is slack for major currency pairs; however, strong movements for AUD, NZD, and their crosses happen when influential news is released and/or when the Pacific session overlaps the Asian session.

Asian Session Overview

Market 24h Clock shows the Asian session as a block of lighten up orange Stock Exchanges - JPX Tokyo, SGX Singapore, SSE Shanghai, HKEX Hong Kong, and NSE Mumbai.

The first major Asian market to open is Tokyo. Tokyo has the largest market share, and is the third largest Forex trading centre in the world. Singapore opens in an hour, and then Chinese Markets: Shanghai and Hong Kong open in 30 minutes. With them trading volume increases and a large-scale trade begins in the Asian - Pacific region offering more liquidity for Asian and Pacific currencies and their crosses. Similarly, more liquidity will be offered to the Asian and European crosses when European countries open for business.

Traded Currency Pairs

Risk tolerant (and / or short-term) traders prefer USD/JPY, GBP/JPY, AUD/JPY and EUR/JPY for their broad ranges.

Risk averse traders prefer EUR/GBP, AUD/USD or NZD/USD (these pairs are less volatile).

In anticipation of the opening of the Europe GBP/JPY, GBP/USD and EUR/GBP considered to be a good choice (highly volatile).

European Session Overview

Market 24h Clock shows the European session as a block of lighten up orange Stock Exchanges - LSE London, FWB Frankfurt, SIX Zurich, and MOEX Moscow.

European session is more often referred to as the London session. London is the first largest Forex trading centre in the world, ca. 30% of all Forex transactions happen during London trading hours. Market share of more than 40%.

This is the most liquid trading session. Forex trends begin during the trading hours of the Europe and will usually continue untill the beginning of the U.S. session. Liquidity goes down closer to lunch time.

Half of the 12 major currency pairs surpass the 80 pips line. Any pair can be traded.
Majors - EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, and USD/CHF.

Risk tolerant traders prefer GBP/JPY and GBP/CHF

Risk-averse traders prefer EUR/USD, USD/CAD, GBP/USD, and USD/CHF with an average of 100 pips range;
NZD/USD, AUD/USD, EUR/CHF, and AUD/JPY, with an average of 50 pips range.

North American Session Overview

Market 24h Clock shows the North American session as a block of following lighten up orange Stock Exchanges - NYSE New York, CHX Chicago, and TSX Toronto.

New York, the leading U.S. Market (the second largest Forex marketplace, 19% of total Forex market volume), Chicago and Toronto (Canada) open the North American session.

It is characterised by the most aggressive trading within markets and it gets even more aggressive on Friday before the trading is closed. Currency pairs show high volatility and traders either take the most profits, or experience significant losses.

The beginning of the American session is the most active time on the Forex market:

- as U.S. markets open, trading is still in action in Europe.

- important American and Canadian fundamental news and economic reports are released.

Trading volume usually decreases with the end of the European session and the U.S. - European Overlap.
